The Government’s Alcohol Strategy

The alcohol strategy sets out proposals to crackdown on our 'binge drinking' culture, cut the alcohol fuelled violence and disorder that blights too many of our communities, and slash the number of people drinking to damaging levels.

The strategy includes commitments to:

  • introduce a minimum unit price for alcohol
  • consult on a ban on the sale of multi-buy alcohol discounting
  • introduce stronger powers for local areas to control the density of licensed premises including making the impact on health a consideration for this
  • pilot innovative sobriety schemes to challenge alcohol-related offending

Alcohol Related Disease: Meeting the Challenge of Improved Quality of Care and Better Use of Resources

A Joint Position Paper on behalf of the British Society of Gastroenterology, Alcohol Health Alliance UK and British Association for Study of the Liver

This paper, which focuses particularly, but not exclusively, on secondary care, makes 11 key recommendations relevant to a typical British District General Hospital, serving a population of 250,000. If implemented, they should improve quality and efficiency of care, lower mortality and reduce admissions and readmissions for patients with alcoholrelated problems. The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test
Guidelines for Use in Primary Care

This manual introduces the AUDIT, the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, and describes how to use it to identify persons with hazardous and harmful patterns of alcohol consumption. The AUDIT was developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a simple method of screening for excessive drinking and to assist in brief assessment. It can help in identifying excessive drinking as the cause of the presenting illness.

This manual is written primarily for health care practitioners, but other professionals who encounter persons with alcohol-related problems may also find it useful. It is designed to be used in conjunction with a companion document that provides complementary information about early intervention procedures, entitled “Brief Intervention for Hazardous and Harmful Drinking: A Manual for Use in Primary Care”. Together these manuals describe a comprehensive approach to screening and brief intervention for alcohol-related problems in primary health care.

Review of the Fetal Effects of Prenatal Alcohol Exposure

In May 2005, the Department of Health (DH) commissioned the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit (NPEU) to undertake a review of the existing evidence on the effects of alcohol on a developing embryo, fetus and child with a particular focus on evidence regarding low to moderate alcohol consumption.

The main purpose of the review is to update what we know, from existing evidence, about the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure - particularly focusing on low-to-moderate levels of alcohol and binge drinking. This is important for strengthening the evidence base for health promotion messages about alcohol consumption for women who are planning to get pregnant and during pregnancy.
