NHS Cancer Screening Programmes

There are three cancer screening programmes:

  • the NHS Breast Screening Programme
  • the NHS Cervical Screening Programme
  • the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.

All three cancer screening programmes are delivered by the NHS. They are coordinated by the national office of the NHS Cancer Screening Programmes, part of Public Health England. The national office team sits within the Health and Wellbeing directorate. We write guidance for the programmes, and produce standards to make sure that you are properly cared for.

Prevention of cancer through lifestyle change and screening

This article looks at the evidence base for primary prevention measures focusing on lifestyle risk factors of tobacco exposure, overweight and obesity, dietary factors, alcohol and physical activity. Some basic principles of screening and screening programmes are discussed with emphasis on the importance of doing more benefits than harms, at a reasonable cost. We look at the evidence for effectiveness of cancer screening programmes, including randomized controlled trials and touch briefly on the ongoing debates for and against the effectiveness of organized screening programmes.

We want to reach a mass audience of men and those who care about them - whatever their age, culture, religion or sexuality.
